The Knock

Jian froze, his alpha dominance instantly replaced by the sharp, tactical alertness of a hunted man. "They tracked me," he whispered, the realization grim.
Leo’s mind raced. The triad didn't politely knock at three in the morning. They were here to finish the job, and if they found an undercover cop bleeding on his table, they would execute both the patient and the doctor without a second thought.
"Get up," Leo commanded, shoving Jian’s shoulder.
Jian groaned, clutching his side as he slid off the table, nearly collapsing as his boots hit the concrete. Leo grabbed him by the bicep, practically dragging the massive man across the basement toward the back wall.
Leo shoved aside a heavy, rolling metal shelving unit lined with sterile bandages and saline bags. Behind it was a dark, narrow recovery alcove, barely large enough for a single cot.
"Get in," Leo ordered. "Do not make a sound. If you bleed through the gauze, press your hand against it."
Jian stumbled into the dark space. For a fleeting second, the alpha cop looked at Leo with a flash of genuine, unmasked vulnerability. He was entirely at the doctor’s mercy. Leo rolled the shelving unit back into place, concealing the alcove perfectly.
Upstairs, the glass shattered. The heavy thud of boots hitting the hardwood floor of the apothecary followed.
Leo spun around. He had less than thirty seconds. He grabbed a bottle of industrial bleach and poured it directly over the puddle of blood Jian had left by the stairs, tossing a heavy surgical towel over it. He kicked the bloody trauma shears under a cabinet, stripped off his blood-soaked gloves, and threw them into the biohazard bin.
He didn't have time to clean the table. He threw a fresh, white paper sheet over the bloodstains, smoothing it out just as heavy footsteps pounded down the wooden basement stairs.
Three men descended into the fluorescent light. They were dressed in dark street clothes, holding suppressed handguns at their sides. The leader, a man with a jagged scar running through his left eyebrow, swept the room with a cold, predatory gaze.
Leo leaned against the edge of the surgical table, crossing his arms over his chest. He slowed his heart rate by sheer force of will, projecting an aura of bored, icy detachment.
"Can I help you?" Leo asked, his voice steady and irritated. "The pharmacy is closed."
"We're looking for Victor," the scarred man said, stepping closer. He eyed the bleach-soaked towel on the floor. "He caught a bad stray tonight. Figured he might come to the best patch-up man in the district."
"He didn't," Leo lied flawlessly, his expression a mask of professional apathy. "I've been sterilizing instruments for the past hour. Haven't seen a soul since midnight."
The triad member stepped up to Leo, close enough that Leo could smell the stale cigarette smoke on his clothes. The man peered past Leo, scanning the sterile, empty room.
"You wouldn't lie to us, Dr. Shen, would you?" the man asked softly. "You know what happens to people who harbor rats."
"I harbor cash," Leo replied coldly, meeting the gangster's gaze without blinking. "If Victor came here, he’d be on this table, and I’d be billing him double for waking me up. But he isn't. So unless you need a prostate exam, get out of my clinic."
The scarred man stared at Leo for a long, suffocating moment. He searched the doctor's eyes for a tell, a tremor, a drop of nervous sweat. He found nothing but the dead-eyed stare of a man who had long ago stopped fearing death.
The gangster snorted, holstering his weapon. "Check the alleys," he barked at his men. He pointed a finger at Leo. "If he shows up, you call us. Before you stitch him."
"Sure," Leo said flatly.
The men turned and marched back up the stairs. Leo waited until he heard their boots crunch over the broken glass of the storefront and fade into the distance. Only then did he let out a slow, controlled breath.
