Chapter 1
The Breach
❧
The scent of dried ginseng, star anise, and sweet licorice root heavily permeated the floorboards of the apothecary above, but down in the basement, the air belonged to bleach and metallic blood.
Dr. Leo Shen stood beneath the harsh, buzzing hum of overhead fluorescent lights, carefully sterilizing a row of stainless steel surgical instruments. The basement was windowless and suffocating, a forgotten concrete bunker repurposed into a fully functional, albeit illegal, trauma bay. It was 3:00 AM. The city above was quiet, but Leo’s world only ever woke up in the dark.
A violent crash shattered the silence. The heavy, reinforced steel door at the top of the basement stairs groaned, then slammed open against the concrete wall.
Leo didn't flinch. He calmly set down his forceps and turned.
A man stumbled down the narrow wooden stairs, leaning heavily against the handrail. He was tall, powerfully built, and dressed in a dark, expensive leather jacket that was currently slick with fresh blood. He moved with the predatory, coiled grace of a cornered animal. This was Jian Wei—known on the streets as Victor—a notorious, lethal enforcer for the local triad syndicate.
Jian hit the bottom landing, his boots leaving thick, crimson smears on the gray concrete. He locked eyes with Leo. Even pale and sweating, Jian radiated a terrifying, aggressive alpha energy that instantly shrank the room.
"Table," Jian grunted, his voice a gravelly rasp. He kept one hand pressed tightly against his lower left abdomen. Blood seeped through his fingers, dripping steadily onto the floor.
"Sit," Leo ordered, his voice icy and completely devoid of intimidation. He pointed to the steel examination table in the center of the room. He had seen monsters bleed before. To Leo, a ruptured artery didn't care about street cred.
Jian dragged himself to the table and hoisted his heavy frame onto the crinkling sanitary paper. He grimaced, his jaw clenching tight enough to pop the muscles in his neck.
Leo snapped on a pair of blue nitrile gloves and stepped into Jian’s personal space. He reached for the zipper of Jian’s jacket. "I need to see the wound. Then I’m going to put you under."
Jian’s hand shot out, his blood-soaked fingers wrapping around Leo’s wrist with bone-crushing force. The triad enforcer’s eyes were dark, dilated, and blazing with absolute refusal.
"No," Jian snarled, pulling Leo an inch closer. The metallic smell of blood mixed with the scent of expensive cologne and gunpowder. "No general. No gas. You do it while I watch."
Leo stared down at the hand bruising his wrist, then up into Jian’s uncompromising gaze. An alpha protecting his vulnerability. To go to sleep in an underground clinic was to surrender total control, and men like Jian never surrendered.
"It's a bullet extraction," Leo said flatly. "You'll go into shock."
"I won't," Jian countered, his grip tightening. "Local anesthetic only. Dig it out, doc. Or I bleed out on your clean floor and bring the cops to your door."
Leo held the stare for three agonizing seconds. Finally, he gave a sharp, clinical nod. "Fine. But if you thrash, I might sever an intestine. Let go of my wrist."
Jian slowly released him. The battle of wills had ended in a tense draw, but the night was only beginning.
