Chapter 6
The Masterpiece
❧
The police never came. The cleaners came. Men in white suits who removed the bodies and scrubbed the floors before the sun came up.
By dawn, the penthouse was pristine again. Except for the mural wall. It remained a slashed, muddy mess of color.
Elara sat on the couch, wrapped in a cashmere blanket. Nikolai sat beside her. His side was bandaged, the white gauze stark against his black skin.
"The lockdown is lifted," Nikolai said quietly. He stared at the city waking up below them. "The threat is gone."
He turned to look at her. His grey eyes were weary, the madness dimmed to a low, steady burn.
"You saved my life," he said. "You are not a prisoner, Elara. I... I went too far. The door is unlocked. You can go."
Elara looked at the elevator doors. They were open. She could leave. She could go back to the museum, to the smell of dust and the quiet, lonely nights. She could go back to a life where no one knew her name, where no one watched her sleep, where no one would burn the world down just to keep her warm.
She looked at the blank canvas Nikolai had set up in the corner—a fresh start.
She looked at the man beside her. The monster who worshipped her. The man who had taken her invisibility and turned it into a spotlight.
The world out there was grey. Here, it was red and gold and terrifyingly bright.
Elara stood up. She walked to the elevator.
Nikolai didn't move. He didn't breathe. He watched her, his hands clenching into fists, forcing himself to let her choose.
Elara pressed the button on the wall panel.
* Close.*
The elevator doors slid shut, sealing the exit. The lock engaged with a heavy, final *thud*.
She turned back to Nikolai.
"I don't want to go," she said.
She walked over to the table of paints. She picked up a tube of gold leaf and a fresh brush. She walked to the ruined mural. She didn't try to fix the angel. She began to paint over the cracks, filling the slashes with pure, molten gold. Kintsugi. Making the broken things beautiful.
"Lock it," she said, not looking back at him. "And don't ever open it again."
Nikolai stood up. A slow, dark smile spread across his face—the look of a starving man finally being fed. He walked to her, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, burying his face in her neck.
"As you wish, *Lyubimaya*," he whispered against her skin. "My masterpiece."
Outside, the snow continued to fall, burying the world in white, leaving them alone in their tower of gold and grey.
