Chapter 6

The Gilded Cage

The grandfather clock in the hall began to chime.
* Dong. Dong. Dong.*
Midnight.
Julian pulled away, his chest heaving. He walked over to the fireplace. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. The contract. The bill of sale.
He tossed it into the fire.
Elena watched as the paper curled, blackened, and turned to ash. The ink of her father’s signature vanished in a burst of orange flame.
"You're free," Julian said, staring into the fire. " The debt is paid. The contract is void."
Elena sat in the velvet armchair, the silver dress pooled around her like liquid mercury. She looked at the fire, then at the shattered glass on the floor, and finally at Julian’s back.
She was free. She could walk out. He wouldn't stop her now. The game was over. The revenge was dead.
But the world outside was cold. The world outside was empty.
Elena reached for the bottle of champagne that had survived Julian’s rage. She poured herself a glass, the bubbles rising aggressively to the surface.
"I have nowhere to go, Julian," she said softly.
Julian turned. He looked at her—really looked at her—and a dark, knowing smile spread across his face. It wasn't the smile of a savior. It was the smile of a jailer who realized the prisoner had handed him the key.
He walked over to her, leaning down to brace his hands on the arms of her chair, trapping her.
"You're free to go, Elena," he whispered, his lips inches from hers. "But we both know you won't."
Elena took a sip of the champagne, her eyes locking with his. The heat between them was suffocating, toxic, and undeniable. She wasn't a victim anymore. She was a volunteer.
"Happy New Year, Julian," she said.
He didn't reply. He just watched her, the predator finally at rest with his prey, as the fire crackled in the hearth, sealing their fate in the gilded cage of Blackwood.
