Chapter 4
The Outlier
❧
Friday night. 11:00 PM.
The deadline was an hour away. The club upstairs was at peak capacity, the thumping bass sounding like a war drum.
"Time's up," Luca said. He finished the bottle of scotch and threw it into the trash can. "Show me the money."
Arthur sat back. He had deleted the simulations. The screen showed a single, simple spreadsheet. It showed the theft. It showed the destination accounts. And it showed Luca’s name.
Arthur stood up. His legs felt like jelly. He clutched his inhaler.
"Well?" Luca loomed over him.
"I... I found the discrepancy," Arthur whispered.
"And?"
"And... I fixed it."
Luca’s eyes lit up. "You hid it? You buried the trail?"
"I... reallocated the ledger," Arthur said. "The ten million is... accounted for."
"Good boy." Luca patted Arthur’s cheek hard enough to sting. "You're a genius. Now, show me the final balance sheet so I can send it to my father."
Arthur turned the laptop screen toward Luca.
Luca squinted at the numbers. He scrolled down. He stopped.
His face turned a majestic shade of purple.
"What is this?" Luca whispered.
"The... the audit trail," Arthur stammered.
"This says the money was transferred to the Police Benevolent Association," Luca’s voice rose to a roar. "In *my* name!"
"It... seemed like a charitable deduction," Arthur squeaked. "For... tax purposes."
Luca stared at him. The silence was absolute.
"You gave my money to the cops?" Luca screamed. "You gave *stolen* money to the cops in my name?"
"The probability of an audit by the IRS was high," Arthur babbled, backing away until he hit the file cabinet. "I... I thought—"
"You thought?" Luca drew the Desert Eagle from his waistband. "You thought you'd be a hero?"
"No! I just... I like balanced books!"
Luca grabbed Arthur by the throat. "You ruined me. My father will skin me alive."
"Statistically..." Arthur gasped, his face turning red.
"Shut up!" Luca threw him toward the door. "We're going downstairs. The office is too nice for what I'm going to do to you."
