Chapter 7

The Bell Tower

Two hours later, the chaos had settled. The Greccos had been expelled from the city limits.
Elara sat on the edge of the Bell Tower, her legs dangling over the city. The sun was setting, painting the sky in bruises of purple and gold.
"Here," Enzo said, sitting beside her. He handed her a fresh bandage. "For your wrists."
Elara took it. "Thanks."
"You were amazing today," Enzo said. "Article 7. I didn't even know there was an Article 7."
"I made it up," Elara confessed, a small smile playing on her lips. "Well, partially. It’s an obscure footnote about janitorial safety. But I figured in the heat of the moment, no one would check."
Enzo threw his head back and laughed. It was a genuine, joyous sound that made Elara’s heart ache.
"You terrify me," Enzo said, looking at her. "In the best way."
The laughter faded. The silence stretched between them, heavy with the things they had almost said in the library.
"Enzo," Elara started, staring at her hands. "In the library... when you talked about the betrothal..."
"I wasn't acting, Elara."
Elara turned to him. Enzo wasn't smiling. He looked terrified and hopeful all at once.
"I didn't try to forge that document because it was a plan," Enzo said softly. "I did it because I wanted it to be true. I’ve wanted it to be true since we were twelve."
"I thought... I thought I was just the strategist," Elara whispered. "The brain. The tool."
"You are the brain," Enzo said, reaching out to cup her face. "But you’re also the heart. My heart. I can't run this city without you, El. And I don't want to live in it without you."
Elara felt the walls around her heart—the walls she had built for years to protect herself—crumble into dust.
"I love you, you idiot," she said.
Enzo didn't wait. He leaned in and kissed her.
It wasn't like the almost-kiss in the library. It was desperate, and sure, and tasted of victory and adrenaline. It was a promise made in ink and sealed in steel.
As the bells began to toll the evening hour, ringing out across the city of Venza, Elara Vance realized she wasn't just a side character in someone else’s story anymore. She was the Queen on the board. And the King was entirely hers.
