Syntax and Claws

The progress bar moved with agonizing slowness.
Inside Kian’s mind, the system fought back. It wasn't just a firewall; it was a psychic defense mechanism. The Registry screamed at him, a thousand dead ancestors shouting that he was unworthy, that he was breaking the Sacred Law. The pain was like boiling oil poured over his brain.
"Warning," Kian gritted out, teeth clenched. "Counter-measures active."
"Focus!" Lyra shouted.
The blast doors exploded inward.
Four Enforcers rushed in. They were massive men, their eyes already glowing gold, muscles ripping through their tactical gear as the change took them. They didn't bother with weapons. They were the weapons.
"Traitor!" the lead Enforcer roared, his voice distorting into a growl. "Step away from the console!"
Lyra didn't hesitate. She dropped her batons and let the change take her.
There was a sickening, wet crunch of bone reshaping. White fur burst from her skin. In seconds, the woman was gone, replaced by a massive white wolf, sleek and terrifying.
She launched herself at the lead Enforcer.
They collided in mid-air with a sound like a thunderclap. Fur and blood flew.
Kian couldn't look. He had to type. He had to code.

"I am rewriting the root directory," Kian shouted over the sounds of snarling and tearing flesh behind him. He wasn't just talking to the machine; he was talking to Lyra. "I am deleting the lineage requirement!"
The digital chains around Lyra’s file began to rust.
Behind him, the White Wolf was thrown against a server rack. Sparks showered down. Lyra yelped, a high, pained sound, but scrambled back to her feet, snapping her jaws at the Enforcers who circled her.
She was outnumbered three to one. She was bleeding from a gash in her flank.
"I overwrite your past!" Kian screamed, typing the syntax that would dissolve the arranged marriage. *DELETE [Thorne\_Contract].*
Lyra let out a roar that shook the stone walls. She wasn't just fighting for her life; she was fighting for her right to choose. She hamstrung one Enforcer, sending him crashing into the cooling pipes. Liquid nitrogen sprayed out, freezing the air.

"I protect your future!" Lyra’s voice echoed in Kian’s head—not spoken, but felt through the mating bond they were trying to forge.
Kian’s nose was bleeding. The neural feedback was blinding him. The Registry was trying to fry his synapses.
"Come on," Kian begged the machine. "Come on, you piece of junk."
An Enforcer broke away from the pack. He saw that Lyra was distracted. He lunged for Kian’s exposed back.
Lyra intercepted him. She took the blow meant for Kian, a set of claws raking down her shoulder. She slammed the Enforcer into the ground, standing over Kian’s body like a living shield.
Blood dripped from her white fur onto Kian’s hands.
"Lyra!" Kian cried out.
"Finish it!" she snarled mentally. "Do it now, Kian!"
