Chapter 1

The Golden Pass

The roar of twenty thousand people was a physical weight, a vibration that rattled the fillings in Mira’s teeth even as she was led away from it.
"Keep moving," the security guard grunted, his hand heavy on her shoulder.
Mira clutched the laminated "Golden Pass" against her chest, the plastic biting into her palm. She couldn't feel her legs. She was floating. The concrete labyrinth of the Zenith Arena’s backstage hallways was a blur of road cases, coiled cables, and harried roadies shouting into headsets, but Mira saw none of it.
She only saw the destination.
They stopped at a heavy steel door marked with a piece of masking tape that simply read: *WOLFSBLOOD - DO NOT ENTER.*
"You got ten minutes, sweetheart," the guard said. He swiped a keycard. "Don't ask for a selfie. He hates selfies."
The door hissed open. Mira stepped through, and the noise of the world vanished.
The Green Room was a sudden, jarring vacuum of silence. The walls were padded with crushed purple velvet, soundproofed to the point where the blood rushing in Mira’s ears sounded like a roaring river. The air was thick, humid, and smelled expensive—aged whiskey, ozone, sweat, and something else. Something muskier. Like wet fur drying by a fire.
Jaxen stood by the vanity mirror.
He was shirtless, his skin slick with the sweat of a three-hour set. He was wiping his face with a white towel, his back to her. The muscles of his shoulders coiled and released with hypnotic fluidity.
"Jaxen?" Mira whispered. Her voice was small, unworthy of the room.
He froze. Slowly, he lowered the towel and turned.
He was devastating. The posters in Mira’s bedroom didn't do him justice. His hair was a damp tangle of black ink, his eyes rimmed with smudged liner that made the pale, unnatural blue of his irises pop like gas flames. He was vibrating with adrenaline, a man who had just held the hearts of thousands in his hand and crushed them for sport.
"The Golden Pass," Jaxen said. His voice was a rasp, rougher than on the albums, worn down by the screaming.
He walked toward the door. Mira thought he was going to throw her out. instead, he threw the deadbolt.
*Click.*
"I've been waiting for you," Jaxen said, leaning against the door, blocking her exit. He stared at her, not with the polite exhaustion of a celebrity meeting a fan, but with the intense, dilated focus of a starving man looking at a banquet. "You're the one from the front row. The one who sang every word."
Mira nodded, tears pricking her eyes. "I... I'm a singer too. Your music, it... it speaks for me."
Jaxen smiled. It wasn't a nice smile. It was too wide, showing too many teeth.
"Does it?" he murmured. "Good. That means the seasoning is right."
