The Arrival

The wind outside the Blackwood Pass clinic didn't just howl; it screamed. It was a physical weight, pressing against the reinforced steel doors, demanding entry.
Dr. Elena Vance stripped off her latex gloves with a sharp *snap*, the sound echoing in the sterile silence of the trauma bay. She checked the generator gauge. Fuel was low, but sufficient. The satellite phone was dead, blocked by the interference of the "Whiteout"—a blizzard so dense it erased the world, turning the Alaskan wilderness into a blank page.
"Just science," Elena whispered to herself, a mantra she had used since she ran away from her father’s pack ten years ago. "Pressure systems. Precipitation. Thermodynamics."
She adjusted her glasses. She liked the clinic. It was white, cold, and logical. There was no magic here. No destiny. Just sutures and charts.
*THUD.*
The sound was heavy, wet, and impossible. Something had slammed against the exterior bay doors.
Elena froze. No human could survive out there.
The electronic lock buzzed, and the doors were forced open. The wind roared into the room, bringing a cloud of snow and the metallic scent of fresh blood.
A figure collapsed onto the linoleum.
He was massive. Even crumpled on the floor, he took up too much space. He wore a shredded tactical vest over a thermal shirt that was soaked black with blood.
Elena’s training kicked in. She grabbed the trauma kit and slid across the floor to him.
"Can you hear me?" she shouted over the wind, kicking the door shut with her heel.
The man groaned. She rolled him onto his back.
He was devastating. Sharp jaw, heavy brow, scars mapping a life of violence across his neck. His chest was a ruin—three deep, parallel gashes tore through the muscle, exposing the white gleam of ribs. Claw marks.
"Shit," Elena hissed. She reached for her trauma shears to cut away the fabric.
As the cold steel touched his skin, his hand shot out.
It was a blur of motion. His fingers clamped around her wrist, bruisingly tight.
Elena gasped, dropping the shears. She looked at his face. His eyes were open. They weren't brown or blue. They were molten gold, glowing with a bioluminescent intensity that defied medical science.
He wasn't looking at the ceiling. He was looking at her. He inhaled deeply, his nostrils flaring as he took in her scent—antiseptic, coffee, and fear.
"Found you," he rasped.
The voice was a low rumble that vibrated through her bones. It wasn't the plea of a dying man. It was the declaration of a conqueror.
Elena tried to yank her wrist back. "Let go. You're bleeding out."
"Mate," he whispered.
Elena flinched. That word. The word she had run thousands of miles to escape. The word that turned women into property and logic into madness.
"I am a doctor," Elena said, her voice shaking with a sudden, irrational heat. "And you are a patient. Now let go, or you die."
He didn't let go. He pulled her closer, smearing his blood onto her white coat. "I'm not dying tonight, little doctor. I just found my reason to live."
