Chapter 2

The Masquerade

Elara stared at her reflection in the darkened window. Pale skin, wide dark eyes, trembling lips. She looked exactly like what she was: a victim.
* No,* she thought, forcing a breath through her nose. *If I panic, I die. If I confront him, I die.*
She couldn't overpower him. Julian was six-foot-two of lean muscle; she was a hundred and ten pounds of bad genetics. But she knew Julian. She knew what he wanted. He didn't just want the money; he wanted *her*. He had always looked at her with a hunger that felt bordering on violence.
She let the robe drop to the floor. Underneath, she wore the white lace lingerie she had bought for this night. It was innocent and corrupt all at once.
She pinched her cheeks to hide the pallor of fear. She smoothed her hair. She forced the terrified rabbit in her chest to be still.
When she walked down the stairs, Julian was pouring two tumblers of amber liquid by the fireplace. The fire cast long, dancing shadows against the brutalist concrete walls.
He looked up. The glass paused halfway to his mouth. His eyes, dark and heavy-lidded, swept over her. It was a look of pure, unadulterated possession.
"Elara," he breathed. "You look... incredible."
"I missed you," she lied. Her voice was breathless, but that worked in her favor. It sounded like desire. She walked to him, her legs feeling like water. "The storm scared me."
"You're safe here," Julian said. He handed her a glass. "Drink. It'll settle your nerves."
She took the glass but didn't drink. Alcohol would mess with her heart rate. "I don't need a drink," she whispered, stepping into his space. She placed a hand on his chest. His heart was beating slow, steady, powerful. The contrast to her own frantic pulse was sickening. "I need you."
Julian set his glass down. He circled her waist with one arm, pulling her flush against him. The heat of his body was overwhelming. It was terrifyingly attractive. Even knowing he wanted her dead, her body reacted to him. The scent of him—musk and cold air—made her head spin.
"You're trembling," he murmured, his lips grazing the sensitive skin of her neck.
"I'm cold," she said. "Warm me up."
His hand moved up her spine, his fingers heavy and possessive. He laughed low in his throat. "You're so fragile, Elara. Like a bird. sometimes I think if I squeezed too hard, you'd just... break."
"Then don't squeeze," she whispered. She tilted her head back, offering him her throat. It was the ultimate submission.
As he kissed her, rougher than necessary, his hand slid into her hair. Elara’s heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped moth. *Thump-thump-thump-thump.* It was too fast. She was getting dizzy. Black spots danced in her vision.
She had to move now.
She pressed her body against his, her hands sliding down his chest, over his ribs, to the pockets of his cargo pants.
"Julian," she moaned against his mouth, a desperate sound.
He groaned, distracted by the feel of her skin. "God, you're beautiful."
Her fingers brushed cold metal. The keys.
She hooked her index finger through the ring. She pulled.
He shifted, pressing her back toward the sofa. She froze, the keys half-out of his pocket. If they jingled, she was dead.
She kissed him harder, biting his lip. He reacted instantly, his grip tightening on her waist, lifting her slightly off the floor. In the movement, the keys slid free into her palm.
She had them.
But the exertion was costing her. Her chest felt like it was being crushed by a vice. The air in the room seemed too thin.
"I need..." she gasped, pulling back. "I need some water. Just a second."
Julian looked at her, his eyes glazed with lust. He smiled, a slow, predatory smile. "Don't be long, Mrs. Vane. The night is young."
He turned back to his drink.
Elara backed away, clutching the keys so hard they cut into her palm. She reached the kitchen island, keeping the counter between them. She looked at the glass sliding door that led to the wraparound balcony.
The driveway was just around the corner of the deck. The car. The pills.
She didn't get water. She bolted.
