Chapter 4
The Open Page

Elias sat at his desk in the bullpen. The station was quiet, the night shift settling into its rhythm of typing and ringing phones.
The official Case Report Form 19 lay in front of him. The cursor on his screen blinked in the box labeled *PERPETRATOR*.
He held his pen over the hard copy, just in case the system went down.
He thought about the man he had let go five years ago. He had followed his heart then, and people had died. He had sworn to follow the facts.
The facts were: Clara Sterling killed Marco Vane.
But the truth was: Silas Sterling was saving her life.
Elias looked at the blinking cursor.
If he typed *Clara Sterling*, the gears of justice would turn. Detectives would raid the east wing. They would drag a mute girl out of her bed. The media vans would circle like vultures. The trial would be a circus. It was legally correct. It was righteous.
If he typed *Silas Sterling*, an old man would die in a cage for a crime he didn't commit. But the girl would be safe. She would have the inheritance, the privacy, the chance to heal.
Elias remembered Silas’s eyes. *Let me be the monster so she can be the victim.*
It was the most noble thing Elias had ever seen. And it was illegal.
Elias felt a bead of sweat roll down his back. His hand cramped around the pen. The tip touched the paper, the ink beginning to bleed into the fiber, spreading like a dark stain.
He looked at the empty line.
He looked at the clock on the wall. The second hand ticked.
*Tick.*
*Tick.*
*Tick.*
Elias stared at the paper, the weight of the pen feeling like a thousand pounds, caught in the paralyzing agony between the truth that destroys and the lie that saves.
He took a breath. He pressed the pen down.
