The Ghost in the Machine

They took the card back to Sasha’s apartment—a converted loft that was more fortress than home. Three deadbolts. Reinforced windows. A panic room disguised as a pantry.
Sasha slotted the card into her encrypted laptop. Leo stood behind her, hand resting on his service weapon, as if he could shoot a digital file.
A single text file opened.
*COORDINATES: 42.3314° N, 83.0458° W.*
*TIME: Midnight.*
"That’s the old Gallery District," Leo said. "Most of those buildings are condemned."
"He wants a meeting," Sasha said.
"It's a trap, Sasha. We call SWAT. We surround the block."
"He won't show if he sees blue," Sasha snapped. She turned to look at Leo. "You know how he works. He watches. He waits. If we flood the zone, he disappears for another five years. I can't live like that, Leo. I can't look over my shoulder anymore."
"I promised to keep you safe," Leo said, his voice breaking. "Five years ago, I promised."
"I don't need you to keep me safe," Sasha said, flexing her hand. The knuckles cracked. "I need you to back me up."
Sasha went to the bathroom to splash water on her face. She looked in the mirror. For a second, the reflection flickered. She saw the librarian. The woman in the cardigan holding a book, terrified of the world.
*You're gone,* Sasha told the ghost. *I burned you to build this.*
But the Architect’s voice echoed in her memory. *I am carving away the weak parts, Sasha. I am revealing the statue inside the stone.*
Was she strong because she survived? Or was she strong because he had made her that way? That was the question that kept her awake at night. That was the poison.
She dried her face. She put on her kevlar vest, her tactical jacket, and holstered her Sig Sauer.
"Let's go," she said.
