Chapter 4

Project Lethe

Caleb opened the file. He read the first page. Then the second.
His blood ran cold.
It wasn't a dossier on a target. It was a medical file.
*Subject: Lena Vance. Operative 794.*
*Status: Compromised.*
*Procedure: Cortical Erasure (Project Lethe).*
*Objective: Asset Protection via Subconscious Encryption.*
Caleb sank onto the sofa, the file trembling in his hands.
"What is it?" Lena asked, her voice small.
"You didn't run," Caleb whispered. "You were scrubbed."
He looked up at her. "The ledger... the list of assets. It’s not in a book. It’s in you."
He read further. *Subject has been conditioned to suppress all memories of Service prior to 2021. Trigger for retrieval: Extreme emotional stress combined with specific auditory stimulus (Voice Print: C. Thorne).*
Caleb dropped the file.
The realization hit him like a physical blow to the gut. Silas knew. Silas knew she hadn't stolen the ledger; she *was* the ledger. But the encryption was too strong. They couldn't torture it out of her because her mind would just shatter. They needed the key.
They needed the emotional trigger.
They needed the one person she had loved enough to bury deep in her subconscious.
"Me," Caleb breathed. "I’m the key."
He stood up, looking at Lena with horror. "I’m the fool."
"What are you talking about?" Lena asked, straining against the ties.
"Silas didn't hire me to kill you," Caleb said, his voice rising. "He hired me to wake you up. My voice. My presence. My anger. It’s the combination to the safe."
He walked over to the window and ripped the curtain back.
In the distance, across the frozen lake, he saw them. Pinpricks of light. Snowmobiles. A helicopter descending low over the tree line.
"They tracked me," Caleb said. "I led them right to you."
He pulled his knife and slashed Lena’s zip ties.
"We have to move," he said, hauling her up.
"Who is coming?" Lena rubbed her wrists, looking at the lights.
"The people who did this to you," Caleb said. He grabbed his rifle. "And the man who made me think I hated you."
