Chapter 5

Rust and Bone

The next morning, the world fell apart.
Elias sat in the hollowed-out shell of a school bus in the Scrapyard. He hadn't gone home. He couldn't.
Maya’s phone, which she had smashed and discarded in the woods, hadn't saved them from the narrative. They had stolen a radio from the yard office. The local news was playing.
*"...suspect identified as Elias Thorne, a student at Oakhaven High. Police believe Thorne developed an obsession with missing student Chloe Miller. Authorities allege he lured her to the Starling Motel and set the fire in a fit of rage when she rejected him. Miller and fellow student Maya Sato are currently missing, believed to be held hostage..."*
Julian had won. He had spun the story perfectly. Elias was the creepy loner, the stalker. The fire destroyed the evidence of the poison, and now Elias was the villain.
Chloe was curled up in the corner of the bus, weeping silently.
Elias stared at his hands. He hated them. He hated his "gift." It hadn't saved anyone. It had just led Julian right to them.
"We should turn ourselves in," Elias said, his voice dead. "Maybe if I confess, he’ll let you guys go."
"Shut up," Maya snapped. She was pacing the length of the bus, covered in soot.
"It’s over, Maya. We lost."
"We only lose if we stop," Maya said. She stopped pacing and crouched in front of him. "Elias, look at me."
He didn't look up. He started to pull his gloves tighter, trying to disappear inside them.
Maya reached out. She grabbed his wrists. Not the gloved part. She slid her fingers under the leather, pressing her bare skin against his pulse.
Elias flinched, expecting the noise. Expecting her fear, her doubt, her anger at him for ruining everything.
But there was no noise.
*A steady hum. Warm. Golden. It felt like standing in a sunbeam. It was... belief. Absolute, unshakable belief. She saw him. Not as a freak, not as a suspect, but as a hero. She trusted him.*
*And underneath the trust, a fierce, burning hope. A refusal to yield.*
Elias looked up, tears stinging his eyes. He had felt a million emotions from a thousand people, and they had all been heavy. Painful. This... this was light. It held him up.
"You are not a monster," Maya said fiercely. "You are the only person who saw the truth. We don't need the drive. We know where the poison is coming from. And we know who signed the orders."
"How does that help? We have no proof," Elias said, but his voice was stronger. The hope was contagious.
"Julian is selling the land," Chloe spoke up from the corner. Her voice was small but clear. "The old Cannery site. He’s meeting investors there today at noon to close the deal before the EPA investigation starts. He has the original hard copies of the geological surveys with him. He carries them in his briefcase. He doesn't trust digital copies anymore."
Elias stood up. The golden warmth of Maya’s belief was still humming in his veins.
"The Cannery," Elias said. "It’s a death trap. The floors are rotted through."
"Exactly," Maya grinned, though it was a sharp, dangerous thing. "He doesn't know the building. But you do."
