Chapter 8

Dawn

The blizzard had broken. The sun was rising over the Detroit skyline, painting the fresh snow in shades of pink and gold.
The stolen ambulance rattled down the highway, miles away from St. Jude’s.
Elena sat in the back, checking Kael’s vitals. He was sitting up, the color returning to his face. The toxin was gone. The gunshot wounds were silver scars.
He looked at her. His golden eyes were soft, the predator gone.
"You destroyed your life," Kael said quietly. "Your career. Your home. Why?"
Elena finished bandaging a cut on his hand—a minor injury from the glass. She held his hand for a moment longer than necessary.
She thought of Toby. She thought of the hesitation that had cost a life. And she thought of the moment she smashed the quench button, choosing action over fear.
"I didn't destroy my life," Elena said. "I saved it."
"But I am a monster," Kael said, looking at his own hands with disgust. "A lab experiment."
Elena reached up and touched his face. He leaned into her palm, closing his eyes.
"I don't see a monster," Elena whispered. "I just see a patient who needed care. And maybe... a partner."
Kael opened his eyes. He smiled, and it was the first human expression she had ever seen on him. It was clumsy, and tentative, and beautiful.
"Where do we go?" he asked.
Elena looked out the window at the open road.
"North," she said. "I hear the winters are quiet."
Kael intertwined his fingers with hers. "North is good."
The ambulance sped on, leaving the city and the smoke behind, carrying two fugitives who had found the only sanctuary that mattered: each other.
