Chapter 2
The Side Quest
❧
The opportunity arrived at 10:00 AM the next day. The timer was down to *26:00:00*.
Elias was sitting in his command center, organizing his recycling, when a sharp rap echoed from his front door.
**[EVENT TRIGGERED]**
He stood up, smoothed his t-shirt, and opened the door.
Clara stood there. She looked flushed, her chest heaving slightly. The Affinity bar above her head hovered steadily at 15%.
"Hi, Elias," she said, offering a breathless, apologetic smile. "I am so sorry to bother you. I know you work from home and hate interruptions."
**[Dialogue Option A: Scold Her]**
**[Dialogue Option B: Slam Door]**
**[Dialogue Option C: Accept Quest]**
"It's fine," Elias said, selecting Option C. His voice sounded rusty to his own ears. "What do you need?"
"It’s the wedding favors," she said, gesturing behind her to her open apartment door. "Mark is stuck at the office, and the delivery guy just left this massive box in the hallway. I can’t lift it over the threshold. Could you...?"
**[SIDE QUEST: DAMSEL IN DISTRESS]**
**Reward:** +?? Affinity.
"I can assist," Elias said.
He stepped out of his unit and followed her into Unit 403. Crossing the threshold felt like entering a restricted map. The air smelled of vanilla and cardboard. The living room was a chaotic explosion of white tulle, ribbon, and seating charts.
He bent down and lifted the box. It was heavy, but his **[STRENGTH]** stat was sufficient. He carried it into the living room and set it down where she pointed.
"Oh my god, thank you," Clara exhaled, wiping her forehead. "You’re a lifesaver. Seriously. Mark is useless this week."
Elias watched the text scroll above her head. *Mark is useless.* She was giving him a hint. She was signaling dissatisfaction with the current route.
"Can I get you some water?" Clara asked. "As a thank you?"
"Hydration would be optimal," Elias replied.
Clara disappeared into the kitchen. Elias stood alone in the living room. His eyes scanned the environment, looking for interactable objects.
* Photos of the couple (Trash).*
* Wedding invitations (Quest Items).*
* Spare keys on the counter.*
* Wedding invitations (Quest Items).*
* Spare keys on the counter.*
The System highlighted the keys with a golden glow. A loot marker bobbed over them.
**[ITEM DETECTED: SPARE KEY]**
**Utility:** Grants unrestricted access to [Target Location].
Elias looked toward the kitchen. He could hear water running. He moved silently, his sneakers squeaking faintly on the hardwood. He reached out and swiped the keys, slipping them into his pocket.
**[ITEM ACQUIRED: KEY TO THE HEART]**
Clara returned a second later with a glass of water. She didn't notice the missing keys. She smiled at him, and for a moment, the sunlight from the window caught her eyes.
"You're a good neighbor, Elias," she said softly. She reached out and squeezed his forearm.
The System glitched.
The pink bar above her head didn't just go up. It convulsed. The number *15%* scrambled, dissolved into static, and then flashed a bright, blinding *90%*.
Elias’s breath hitched. *Ninety percent.* That was the threshold for the Romance Route. She didn't just want him to move a box. She wanted him to save her.
"Just doing what is necessary," Elias said. He drank the water in one gulp and left before he messed up the dialogue tree.
He had the key. He had the affinity. The endgame was set.
