Chapter 3
The Frequency
❧
The training began the next day.
Caleb expected gym advice or pickup lines. Instead, Vance gave him instructions that felt like rituals.
"Wear this," Vance said on Tuesday morning, handing Caleb a tie. It was silk, dyed a red so deep it looked like clotted blood. "Don't tie it too tight. Let it breathe."
"Hum this," Vance said on Wednesday. He pressed his forehead against Caleb’s and hummed a low, discordant tone deep in his throat. It wasn't a song. It was a vibration, barely audible, that made Caleb’s teeth ache. "Do this when you walk past her desk. It resonates with the limbic system."
Caleb felt ridiculous. He felt insane. But he was also desperate.
He wore the tie. He hummed the frequency.
The results were immediate and terrifying.
When he walked past Maya’s cubicle on Wednesday afternoon, humming the low thrum, she didn't just look up. She snapped her head toward him as if pulled by a wire.
"Caleb," she said. Her voice sounded breathless.
He stopped, his heart hammering. "Hi, Maya. Just... heading to the copier."
She stood up. Maya was small, with kind eyes and nervous hands. But today, her hands were still at her sides. She walked around her desk and stood inches from him. She sniffed the air near his chest, near the red tie.
"You smell..." She struggled for the word. "Vital."
"New cologne," Caleb lied, sweating.
"I was wondering," she said, her eyes locked onto his throat. "Are you busy Friday? I was thinking we could get dinner."
Caleb felt a rush of euphoria so strong it almost knocked him over. It was working. The magic, the tricks, whatever Vance was doing—it was working.
"I'd love that," he said.
When he told Vance that night, the neighbor didn't cheer. He just nodded, his black eyes glistening.
"Good," Vance purred. " The connection is established. Now we just need to feed it."
