The Glitch

"Did you get it?" Julian asked. He wiped a smudge of her lipstick from his mouth with his thumb.
Elena stiffened. "Get what?"
" The upload." He tapped his temple. "Your lens. Older tech, bit latency-heavy, but effective for street-level grifters."
Elena took a step back toward the doors. "I'm leaving."
"You are," Julian agreed. "But not with what you think."
He walked past her, picking up his drink from the railing where he’d set it. "I disconnected the local server an hour ago, Elena. The biometric lock on the files you want? It’s been changed. My retina doesn't open that door anymore."
Elena felt the blood drain from her face. The upload bar in her vision blinked green, indicating success, but if the server was offline... what had she just sent?
"Then why let me do it?" she hissed. "Why let me get close?"
"Curiosity," Julian shrugged. "I wanted to see if you still had the nerve. And... I needed you to stand very still for a moment."
He pulled a phone from his pocket and tapped the screen. "You see, my security system is a bit aggressive. It doesn't just block intruders; it tags them. When your lens attempted the handshake with my network, it didn't download my files. It uploaded your GPS signature."
He turned the screen toward her. A bright red dot pulsed on a map of the city.
"To whom?" Elena whispered.
"To the freelance market," Julian said lightly. "I put a bounty on that signal five minutes ago. It activates... now."
