Chapter 3

The Tether

Sophie frowned, applying a butterfly bandage to the cut over his eye.
"Is that what you think you are?" she asked. "A monster?"
"I hear what they call me," Gavin said. "The Golem. The Reaper. I go out there, and I hurt people, Sophie. And the crowd cheers. They love the blood. And the scary part is... sometimes I like it. Because it's the only time I feel quiet."
He looked at his hands—those massive, destructive hands.
"I tried to stay away," he continued. "But tonight... after the fight... the adrenaline crashed, and I was just sitting in the locker room, and I felt cold. So cold. And I realized I didn't want to go back to my empty penthouse. I wanted..."
He looked up at her. The longing on his face was raw, stripping away the NHL superstar veneer.
"I wanted you," he finished.
Sophie stopped moving. The washcloth dripped into the sink.
Gavin reached out. He grabbed her wrist—not hard, but desperate. Like a man falling off a cliff.
"I break things, Sophie," he rasped. "That's all I know how to do. I break bones, I break plays, I break hearts. I’m terrified I’m going to break you."
The air in the tiny bathroom grew heavy, charged with twelve years of unsaid words. This was the First Love that never died; it just got buried under ice and ambition.
Sophie looked at him. She saw the fear behind the bruise. She saw the boy who used to sleep on her couch because his own house was too loud.
She pulled her wrist free from his grip.
Gavin flinched, expecting rejection.
Instead, Sophie placed her hand flat over his heart. She could feel it thundering through the ruined dress shirt, a frantic, powerful rhythm.
"You don't break me," she said firmly. "You never have."
She leaned in. She took his battered hand in hers, lifting it to her lips. She kissed the split knuckles, tasting copper and salt. It was a benediction. A reclaiming.
"You're not a monster to me, Gavin," she whispered against his skin. "You're just the guy who needs me to patch him up."
Gavin let out a sound that was half-sob, half-sigh. The tension that held his massive frame together seemed to snap.
"Sophie," he groaned.
He leaned forward, burying his face in the crook of her neck. His arms went around her waist, pulling her flush against him. He held on tight, shaking with the force of his relief.
Sophie wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders, stroking the back of his neck where the hair was damp with sweat.
"I've got you," she murmured. "I've got you."
