Chapter 6
The Broadcast
❧
Los Angeles, two days later.
The press conference was set up in the lobby of Vance Management. Marcus Vance stood at the podium, wearing a somber suit.
"We are relieved," Marcus said into the nest of microphones, "that Elara has been found. She is currently undergoing evaluation. The stalker, a known cyber-terrorist, is in custody. It is a tragedy that Elara’s mental state made her vulnerable to such manipulation."
Elara watched from the wings. She was wearing a white dress. Her hair was perfect. She looked like the doll again.
Marcus turned. "And now, Elara would like to say a few words before retiring to privacy."
Elara walked onto the stage. The cameras flashed.
She gripped the podium. She saw Marcus nodding encouragingly from the side. He thought he had won. He thought the hard drive was lost in the desert. He thought Kael was going to prison for kidnapping.
Elara looked at the teleprompter. It read: *I am grateful to be safe. I need time to heal.*
She looked at the camera.
"I am safe," she said.
Then, she reached into her pocket. She pulled out a small USB transmitter—a gadget Kael had taught her to use. She plugged it into the podium’s digital port.
The teleprompter flickered.
Behind her, the massive screen displaying her album cover glitched.
Static. Then, a document appeared.
**PROJECT: PUPPET MASTER.**
The crowd gasped.
"I wasn't kidnapped," Elara said, her voice ringing clear and strong. "I was rescued."
The screen began to cycle through the emails. The receipts for the poison. The plan to imprison her.
"Marcus Vance has been drugging me for two years," Elara announced. "The man you call a stalker is the only person who told me the truth. Kael Riker saved my life."
Marcus lunged for her. "Cut the feed! She’s having an episode!"
But the feed didn't cut. The world was watching.
"I am not a product!" Elara shouted, pointing at Marcus. "And I am done being your doll."
Police sirens wailed outside. They had been called by the FBI agents Elara had met with that morning.
As the officers swarmed the stage to handcuff a screaming Marcus Vance, Elara didn't flinch. She looked straight into the camera lens, knowing Kael was watching from his holding cell.
She touched her heart. *Thank you.*

**Epilogue**
*Six Months Later.*
The trial was the media event of the century. Marcus Vance was sentenced to twenty years for fraud, embezzlement, and attempted poisoning.
The kidnapping charges against Kael Riker were dropped. The narrative had shifted. He wasn't a villain; he was the dark knight who saved the pop princess.
The desert was hot.
A vintage Ford truck rumbled down the dusty road in the Mojave. Elara Vance sat in the driver’s seat. She was wearing jeans and a flannel shirt. The radio was playing her new song—an acoustic rock ballad that was topping the charts.
She pulled up to the rebuilt bunker.
A figure was on the roof, installing a new satellite dish.
Kael stopped working. He looked down.
Elara climbed out of the truck. She held up a grocery bag.
"I need a new IT guy," she called out, shielding her eyes from the sun. "My laptop is acting up."
Kael slid down the ladder. He looked healthier. The prison stint had been short, and the acquittal had been sweet.
He walked up to her, wiping grease from his hands on a rag.
"I'm expensive," he warned, a smirk playing on his lips. "I don't work for free."
"I brought pasta," Elara said. "Carbonara. Real bacon."
Kael laughed—a rare, genuine sound that echoed off the rocks.
"That'll cover the deposit," he said.
He closed the distance. Elara dropped the bag.
He kissed her, and this time, there were no cameras, no flashbulbs, and no countdowns. Just the desert, the silence, and the two of them, finally rewriting their own ending.
"Welcome home, Glitch," she whispered.
"Good to be back, Princess," he replied.
