Chapter 3
Donut Diplomacy
❧
Over the next two weeks, an odd routine developed.
Every morning, Sebastian would report to Penny for "Sunshine Training." Every evening, they would meet at the Craft Services tent—the neutral ground of the film set.
It was 9:00 PM on a Tuesday. The set was cold, damp, and smelling of fake fog.
Penny was sitting on a crate of bottled water, eating a stale donut. Sebastian was sitting opposite her on a folding chair, wearing a powder blue hoodie that Penny had bought him at Gap.
"I feel like a marshmallow," Sebastian complained.
"You look approachable," Penny countered. "Today was good. You told the boom operator to 'have a nice day' and he didn't call security."
"I felt dirty," Sebastian admitted. "It was so... casual."
He reached for a donut. His fingers brushed hers.
Penny felt a spark—static electricity, surely.
"Why do you do it?" Penny asked suddenly. "The method acting? The darkness? You’re actually... well, you’re kind of a dork, Sebastian."
Sebastian paused, a donut halfway to his mouth. "A dork?"
"Yeah. You use big words when you're nervous. You hide under tables. You’re not Malakor the Soul-Eater. You’re just a guy who read too much Shakespeare in high school."
Sebastian lowered the donut. He looked at the Craft Services tent, at the flashing lights of the equipment trucks outside.
"It is armor," he said quietly. "When I was young, I was... soft. People hurt soft things, Penny. They break them. So I decided to become something sharp. If I am the Villain, I control the fear. If I am the Monster, no one can reject me because I have already rejected them."
He looked at her. His dark eyes were vulnerable in a way she had never seen on screen.
"But then Clarissa rejected the Monster," he whispered. "And I realized I have nothing left underneath."
Penny’s heart broke a little. She reached out and touched his hand.
"You have this," she said. "You’re funny. You’re smart. And you share your donuts. That’s not nothing."
Sebastian looked at her hand on his. He turned his hand over, interlacing his fingers with hers. His skin was cold; hers was warm.
"You are the only one who sees it," he said. "Everyone else sees the mask. You see the... dork."
"I like the dork," Penny whispered.
Sebastian leaned in. The air in the tent grew heavy. He wasn't smiling like a wolf. He wasn't acting. He was just looking at her like she was the only light in the room.
"Penny," he started.
"Sebastian! We need you for the torture scene!" the 1st AD shouted from outside.
They jumped apart. Sebastian cleared his throat. He stood up, adjusting his powder blue hoodie.
"I must go," he said stiffly. "I have to... torture some elves."
"Right," Penny said, her face burning. "Go. Break a leg. Or... someone else's."
