Chapter 4
The First Down
❧
The breakdown changed things. The boundaries dissolved.
Elena stopped sleeping at her apartment. She slept on Jax’s oversized sectional, curled up with Goldie, while Jax slept in his room. But they ate breakfast together. They drank coffee together.
Jax’s knee was improving. He was doing his PT exercises with a vengeance, motivated by Elena watching him.
"Look at that form," Elena teased one evening, watching him do squats. "Almost ready for the Super Bowl."
"Forget the Super Bowl," Jax said, wiping sweat from his forehead with a towel. "I have a bigger goal."
"Oh yeah? What?"
"Cooking you dinner. Standing up. No stools."
Elena smiled. "Ambitious."
"Watch me."
And he did. That night, Jax made risotto. He stood at the stove for forty-five minutes, gritting his teeth through the ache, refusing to sit.
He served it at the kitchen island. He lit candles.
"To the team," Jax said, raising his wine glass.
"To the team," Elena clinked hers against his.
She looked at him. The candlelight softened the sharp angles of his face. He wasn't the broken athlete anymore. He was just a man who had fought to make her rice.
"Thank you," she said softly.
"For what?"
"For catching me."
Jax set his glass down. He walked around the island. His limp was barely there.
He stood in front of her.
"You caught me first, El," he said.
He reached out and cupped her face. His hands were rough, warm.
He kissed her.
It wasn't tentative. It was a claiming. It was months of fear and isolation pouring into a desperate need for connection. Elena stood up and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer.
For a moment, the world outside didn't exist. There was no virus. No ventilators. Just Jax, and the smell of risotto, and the soft snoring of puppies in the corner.
It felt like hope.
