Under the lift of a frozen truck in Doyle's Auto & Repair, Harper Doyle is fighting a losing battle against a rusted transmission and a predatory loan shark. Her solitude is interrupted by the arrival of Silas Vance, the stranger who has been sending her anonymous checks since her brother died in combat. When Silas announces he isn't leaving until he's fulfilled his promise to "watch over" her, Harper's walls go up, sparking a war of attrition between a woman who refuses to be saved and a man who believes he is too broken to love anything but the mission.
