The Spectrum of Color

By the third day, the corner office had transformed.
It was subtle at first. A drawing taped to the glass wall. A box of crayons left on the sideboard. But soon, Ivy’s chaotic energy began to seep into Julian’s monochrome world.
She brought snacks—bright red berries, orange crackers. She wore scarves that looked like abstract paintings.
Julian should have hated it. He hated clutter.
But he found himself waiting for the door to open at 9:00 AM.
"You're wrong about the header," Ivy argued on Thursday, standing over his desk. "It needs to be bold. You want to convey strength, not hesitation."
"I want to convey elegance," Julian countered, leaning back. "Bold is just shouting in font form."
"Elegance is boring," Ivy snapped. "Vanguard isn't boring. You aren't boring."
Julian raised an eyebrow. "I'm not?"
"No," Ivy said, flushing slightly. "You're... intense. Specific. But not boring."
Leo tugged on Julian’s pant leg.
Julian looked down. Leo held up a blue crayon.
"He wants you to color," Ivy interpreted.
"I am the CEO of a Fortune 500 company," Julian said.
Leo thrust the crayon forward.
Julian sighed. He slid out of his ergonomic chair and sat on the floor. His suit trousers pulled tight over his thighs.
Ivy watched, breathless, as Julian Thorne, the Ice King, began to color a sky.
"You stay in the lines," Ivy teased, sitting down next to him.
"Chaos is inefficient," Julian murmured.
"Chaos is life," Ivy countered, grabbing a green crayon and scribbling wild grass that overlapped the sky.
Julian watched her hand move. He looked at her wrist, where a faint scent of vanilla perfume lingered. He looked at her face, animated and bright.
He realized, with a sudden jolt of terror, that the silence he craved was no longer empty. It was filled with her.
"Why are you single?" Julian asked abruptly. The question was a violation of every HR policy in existence.
Ivy stopped coloring. She looked at Leo, who was focused on a cloud.
"I'm too much," she said quietly. "Too loud. Too messy. Too emotional. People say they like the manic pixie dream girl thing until they have to live with the glitter in the carpet."
She looked at Julian. "And I come as a package deal. Most guys don't want a kid who won't say hello to them."
Julian looked at Leo. "Then most guys are idiots."
Their eyes locked. The air in the room grew heavy, charged with the same electricity Ivy remembered from five years ago. The way he looked at her... intense, consuming.
"Ivy," Julian said. He used her first name.
The door opened.
"Mr. Thorne, the legal team is—" His assistant froze, staring at her boss sitting on the floor with a crayon.
Julian stood up smoothly, adjusting his jacket. The mask slammed back into place.
"Tell them to wait ten minutes," Julian said coldly. "We are finishing the sky."
