The Deed

Elena’s shock crystallized into anger.
"Get out," she snapped, pointing to the door. "You think you can just walk in here after five years? After everyone in town told me you were running guns in Sudan or hunting gold in the Amazon?"
"It was diamonds in the Amazon," Kaelen said calmly. "And I wasn't running guns. I was acquiring assets."
"I don't care what you were doing. You abandoned me."
"I left," Kaelen said, his eyes darkening, "because I was a broke kid with a criminal record and you were the princess of the Cliffside Inn. Your father told me I'd never be good enough. He was right."
He walked around the counter. Elena backed up until she hit the door to the kitchen.
"We need to talk," Kaelen said. "In private."
He didn't wait for her permission. He ushered her into the small, private kitchen where she took her meals. It was warmer here, smelling of rising dough and dried herbs.
Elena crossed her arms, trying to hold herself together. "Talk fast, Kaelen. Then leave."
Kaelen placed a black briefcase on the scratched pine table. He looked at the room—the peeling paint, the ancient stove. He looked at Elena—the dark circles under her eyes, the frayed cuffs of her sweater.
"You look tired, El," he said softly.
"I'm working," she deflected. "Some of us have responsibilities."
"Responsibilities," Kaelen scoffed. "Is that what you call cleaning up your father's mess? I know about the gambling, Elena. I know about the second mortgage."
Elena went cold. "How do you know that?"
Kaelen opened the briefcase. He pulled out a thick document bound in blue paper. He slid it across the table.
Elena looked down. *Deed of Trust. Transfer of Ownership.*
She read the name at the bottom. *Thorne Enterprises.*
"You..." Elena looked up, horror dawning. "You bought the Inn?"
"I bought the debt," Kaelen corrected. "Every cent your father owed to the bank, to the loan sharks, to the suppliers. I paid it all off this morning."
Elena felt the room spin. "You own us."
"I own the building," Kaelen said. "I own the dirt. But I did it for you."
"For me?" Elena shouted, slamming her hand on the table. "You think humiliating me is doing something *for* me? You think controlling my life is a gift?"
"It's not control!" Kaelen roared back, his composure finally cracking. The dangerous edge that had made him infamous flared in his eyes. "It's protection! I left to get rich, Elena. I risked my life in every hellhole on this planet to get enough money to come back and buy your freedom."
He stepped closer, crowding her space.
"I would burn the world to keep you warm," he growled. "I bought this place so you wouldn't have to work yourself to death fixing a roof that should have been replaced ten years ago. I did it because I haven't slept a full night since the day I walked away from you."
Elena stared at him. She saw the scar on his neck pulse with his heartbeat. She saw the desperation beneath the aggression.
"You're crazy," she whispered.
"Obsessed," Kaelen corrected. "There's a difference. One is a sickness. The other is a commitment."
He reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers were rough, calloused from years of violence and searching.
"I did it because you're mine, Elena. You always have been. Even when I was half a world away, bleeding out in a jungle, I was yours."
