Chapter 1

The Spin Cycle

The Sprawl smelled like wet asphalt and ozone, a permanent, electric scent that stuck to the back of the throat. It was 3:00 AM in Sector 4, the hour when the neon signs buzzed with a dying flicker and the honest people were asleep, leaving the streets to the predators and the prey.
Cole stood across the street from the *Suds & Duds* 24-hour laundromat, watching the girl through the rain-streaked glass.
She was sitting on top of dryer #4, her knees pulled to her chest, watching her clothes tumble in the machine below. She looked small. Too small to be worth half a million credits.
Cole checked his phone. The notification from the syndicate was still blinking: *TARGET SIGHTED. CONFIRM ACQUISITION.*
He pocketed the device, pulled up the collar of his coat, and crossed the street. He was seventeen, but his eyes were older, hardened by years of finding things people didn't want found. He was a Finder. And this was just another job.
The bell above the door jingled as he stepped inside. The air was warm and smelled of artificial lavender and bleach, a sharp contrast to the cold rain outside. The fluorescent lights hummed with a headache-inducing vibration.
Cole flipped the sign on the door to *Closed* and turned the lock.
The girl didn't run. She didn't scream. She just looked up.
Her face was pale, translucent under the harsh lights, framed by wet, dark hair. There were dark circles bruised under her eyes, speaking of weeks without real sleep.
"You found me," she said. Her voice was flat, hollowed out.
"It took three weeks," Cole said, walking toward her slowly, keeping his hands visible. "You're good at disappearing, Maya."
Maya looked at the dryer, watching the colors blur. "Not good enough."
Cole stopped a few feet away. He could see the tremor in her hands. He reached for his phone to make the call. This was the moment. The transaction. He calls the number, the black SUVs roll up, he gets paid, and he buys his way out of Sector 4.
Maya turned her head to look at him. Her eyes were terrifyingly empty.
"So," she whispered. "Are you going to sell me, or keep me?"
Cole froze. His thumb hovered over the screen. He had expected begging. He had expected bargaining. He hadn't expected the resignation of livestock waiting for the butcher.
"I'm a Finder," Cole said, his voice grittier than he intended. "I find things. I get paid."
"That's what they all say," Maya murmured. "Until they see the merchandise."
