The Contract

The breakfast meeting was tense. The silence between Elena and Ben was louder than the clinking of silverware.
Lars pushed a thick document across the table.
"The acquisition agreement," Lars beamed. "Everything is in order. I am happy to welcome *Nook* into the family."
Elena picked up her pen. This was it. The moment she had worked for.
"And," Lars added, buttering his toast, "I included a clause about leadership transition. You know, for when you and Ben start a family. You will want to step back. Raise the babies. Let the men handle the logistics."
He winked at Ben.
Elena’s pen hovered over the paper.
*Step back.*
*Raise the babies.*
*Let the men handle it.*
She looked at the contract. It was a billion dollars. It was security.
She looked at Ben. He was staring at his plate, looking miserable. He hadn't said a word all morning.
Elena looked back at Lars.
"No," Elena said.
Lars blinked. "Excuse me?"
"No," Elena repeated. She put the pen down. "I won't sign this."
"Elena," Lars frowned. "This is standard."
"It's sexist garbage," Elena said, her voice rising. "And I don't need a 'transition plan.' I built this company from a laptop in my kitchen. I run it better than anyone."
"Elena, be reasonable," Lars warned. "Think of your fiancé."
Elena looked at Ben. She saw the man who had slept on the floor so she could have the bed. The man who had fed her stray cats. The man who kissed her on the ice like she was the only thing in the world.
"He's not my fiancé," Elena announced.
Lars dropped his toast. "What?"
"He's not my fiancé," Elena stood up. "He's my best friend. I lied, Lars. I lied because I knew you wouldn't respect a single woman running a business. I dragged him here, I made him lie, and he did it because he is the kindest, most loyal, most wonderful man I know."
She looked at Ben. He was looking up at her, eyes wide.
"He didn't need to handle me," Elena said, her voice breaking. "He supported me. And frankly, he is worth ten of this company. So keep your wool, Lars. I'd rather have my integrity. And my friend."
She ripped the contract in half.
"Come on, Ben," she said.
She turned and marched out of the dining hall.
