Chapter 3

Chewy Spheres

"I cannot believe you have never had boba," Lily said.
It was week two. They were on a "field break." Lily had insisted that if she was going to stare at microfiche for four hours, she needed fuel. She dragged Arthur to "Bean There," the chaotic, loud student coffee shop across the street.
Arthur stood in the line, looking like a Victorian time traveler who had taken a wrong turn. He clutched his leather briefcase as if it were a shield against the dubstep music playing overhead.
"I prefer Earl Grey," Arthur said stiffly. "Hot. In a ceramic cup."
"Live a little," Lily ordered. She turned to the barista. "Two Taro Milk Teas with tapioca pearls. Extra ice."
When the drinks arrived, Arthur inspected the cup with deep suspicion.
"What are those black orbs at the bottom?"
"Boba," Lily said, stabbing her straw through the plastic lid with a satisfying *pop*. "Tapioca balls. Chewy spheres of joy. Drink."
Arthur took a tentative sip. His eyes widened. He chewed. He frowned. He chewed again.
"It is... textured," he said.
"Is that 'Academic Speak' for gross?"
"No," Arthur admitted, taking another sip. "It is surprisingly pleasant. Like a gummy bear that drowned in tea."
Lily laughed. It was a loud, unselfconscious sound that made several students look over. Usually, Arthur hated being the center of attention. Today, watching Lily laugh with a milk moustache, he didn't mind.
"So," Lily said, leaning on the table. "Why the Archives? Why not teach?"
"I do teach. Occasionally."
"Yeah, but you hide in the basement. Is it because books don't talk back?"
"Precisely," Arthur said. "Books are reliable. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end. People are... messy. They spill things. They have feelings that don't fit into the filing system."
"Messy is good," Lily said. "Messy is how you know you're alive. If everything is perfect, you're just a museum exhibit."
Arthur looked at her. She was wearing a t-shirt with a cat in space on it. She was messy. She was loud. And she made him feel more alive than he had in a decade.
"Perhaps," Arthur said quietly. "Perhaps I have been an exhibit for too long."
He took another sip of his boba.
"You have foam on your lip," Lily said.
Before he could reach for his handkerchief, she reached out and wiped it away with her thumb.
Her skin was warm. The touch was electric.
Arthur froze. Lily froze.
For a second, the noise of the coffee shop faded. Arthur looked at her lips. He wanted to kiss her. The thought was so improper, so unprofessional, that it terrified him.
"We should get back," Arthur said abruptly, standing up. "The microfiche won't view itself."
He marched out, leaving Lily staring after him, her heart hammering a chaotic rhythm against her ribs.
