Chapter 6

Sunrise

The doors unlocked at 6:00 AM.
The sun was rising over the parking lot, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange.
Penny’s mom, Linda, was waiting by her car, looking sheepish and wearing oversized sunglasses. She had Toby in the car seat already, apologizing profusely to Principal Skinner.
Penny stood by the curb with Archer. They were exhausted. They smelled like sour milk and sweat.
"So," Archer said, jamming his hands into his jacket pockets. "That was... a night."
"Yeah," Penny laughed tiredly. "Thanks for... everything. You were right. You make a good dad. In a hypothetical, distant future kind of way."
"I try," Archer grinned. "So, about that deal."
"The Calculus?"
"Yeah. I still need to pass."
"I'll tutor you," Penny promised. "Every day next week. Library. No babies allowed."
"Good," Archer stepped closer. He invaded her personal space, just like in the closet, but this time there was no fear. Just gravity.
"But I have a new condition," Archer said.
Penny looked up at him. "What?"
"We have to go on a date first. A real one. Dinner. Movie. No dodging Mr. Grist."
Penny smiled. It was the brightest thing in the parking lot.
"Deal."
Archer leaned down. He kissed her. It tasted like morning coffee and victory.
From the car, Toby let out a happy gurgle.
Penny broke the kiss, laughing. "I think he approves."
"He better," Archer said, taking her hand. "I changed his diaper. We're bonded for life."
They walked toward the car together, leaving the lock-in behind, ready to face the scariest thing of all: graduation. But at least they were on the same team.
