Chapter 2

The Fracture

Renna stared at the keys. Fear was a cold knot in her stomach. Disobedience was punished. Failure was punished. But she didn't know how to do this.
Trembling, she lifted her right hand. She let it hover over the ivory.
Her thumb twitched.
It hit a note. *Middle C.*
The sound rang out—clear, bright, and shattering in the silent room.
Before she could think, her other fingers followed. They moved without her permission, stretching into a chord that resonated in her chest. It wasn't a mechanical movement. It was fluid. Instinctive.
She played the first bar of the melody.
*Flash.*
Pain exploded in her head. White light blinded her.
*She wasn't in the Spire. She was in a park. The sun was hot. The grass was green—real green, not the synthetic turf of the wealthy.*
*A boy was sitting next to her on the bench. He had a crooked smile and messy hair. He was laughing.*
*"I bet you can't play it faster," the boy teased.*
*"Watch me, Kael," she shot back.*
*Kael. Not Master Kaelen. Kael.*
Renna gasped, her hands slamming down on the keys in a discordant crash. She doubled over, clutching her head. The memory was a physical blow, cracking the chemical dam in her mind.
"Breathe," Kaelen’s voice was right beside her ear. He was kneeling next to the bench, his hands hovering near her shoulders but not touching her. "Let it come."
"Who are you?" Renna wheezed, the image of the laughing boy burning behind her eyelids.
"I’m the reason you're here," Kaelen said. His voice broke. "Remember the rest, Renna. Remember the debt."
Renna looked at him. The face of the Syndicate heir overlaid the face of the boy in the park.
*Flash.*
*Nighttime. Rain. Kael was standing at her front door. He was shaking. He was holding a datapad.*
*"I lost it," he was sobbing. "I thought I could double it. It was a sure thing, Renna. I bet the syndicate accounts."*
*"You stole from your father?" Renna’s voice, full of horror.*
*"He'll kill me," Kael wept. "If he finds out, he'll kill me. Unless... unless someone else takes the blame. Unless the debt is transferred."*
*Renna stared at him. "You want me to take it? Kael, my family... we can't pay that."*
*"I'll fix it!" Kael grabbed her hands. "I promise. Just take the fall. I’ll get the money. I’ll buy you out. A week. Two weeks tops."*
*She signed. She signed because she loved him. She signed because he was her best friend.*
*And then he ran. He got in a car and drove away. And the Debt Collectors came. They took her house. They took her parents. They took her name and gave her a number.*
*Three years.*
Renna pulled away from the piano, scrambling backward until her back hit the leg of a sofa. She stared at Kaelen with wide, horrified eyes. The hollow ache in her chest was gone, replaced by a firestorm of betrayal.
"You," she whispered. "You did this."
Kaelen didn't deny it. He stayed on his knees. "I was a coward. I was scared of my father. I thought... I thought I could fix it fast. But he locked me away. He sent me to the Academy. By the time I got out, you were already in the system. You were Blanked."
"Three years," Renna choked out. "I scrubbed floors. I forgot my mother’s name. Because of a bet?"
"I have spent every second of every day since then clawing my way to the top," Kaelen said, tears streaming down his face. "I killed men to get this position. I stole. I lied. All to get the credits to buy your contract."
He reached out a hand, palm up. "I bought you to wake you up, Renna. I needed you to know."
Renna looked at his hand. It was the hand of the boy who promised to protect her. It was the hand of the monster who sold her.
Her training kicked in. The neural conditioning that made disobedience physically painful.
She slumped, her head bowing automatically.
"I understand, Master," she said, her voice dead. "I am yours to command. Do you wish for me to continue playing?"
Kaelen recoiled as if she had stabbed him. "No. Don't do that. Don't call me that."
"But you bought me," Renna said dullly. "I am your property."
"No!" Kaelen shouted. The sound echoed off the glass walls.
