Chapter 1

The Merger

The ballroom of the Van Der Hoven estate smelled of white roses and old money. It was a suffocating, cloying scent, masking the underlying rot of the occasion.
Elena stood by a marble pillar, clutching a flute of sparkling cider so hard she feared the stem might snap. She was wearing white—a choice her mother had insisted upon to symbolize innocence, though everyone in the room knew this was a business transaction, not a fairy tale.
"Smile, El," her father hissed in her ear, his hand clamping down on her shoulder with bruising force. "The stock price is already up three points on the rumors. Don't tank it with that face."
Elena forced the corners of her mouth upward. It felt like dragging a heavy stone uphill.
"And now," the host’s voice boomed over the speakers, "let us raise a glass to the union of two great dynasties. To Elena and Cole!"
Applause rippled through the room. It was polite, measured, and terrifyingly loud.
Across the room, Cole Van Der Hoven stepped forward.
He was the kind of boy who looked like he had been grown in a laboratory funded by a hedge fund. Golden hair swept back with careless precision, a jawline that could cut glass, and a tuxedo that cost more than most people’s cars. He raised his glass, flashing that famous, lazy grin that had landed half the girls at St. Jude’s Prep in therapy.
He caught Elena’s eye. He winked.
Elena felt bile rise in her throat. She didn't just dislike Cole; she loathed him. He was a predator in a silk tie, a boy who treated relationships like sport. Last semester, he had seduced her best friend, promised her the world, and then ghosted her the moment she slept with him.
And now, he was her fiancé.
The crowd began to mingle. Elena tried to retreat toward the terrace doors, but Cole cut through the throng like a shark through water.
"You look thrilled," he drawled, sliding into her personal space. He smelled of expensive scotch and arrogance. "Try not to look so nauseous, Elena. It’s unflattering."
"I'm not nauseous," Elena said, her voice dripping with ice. "I'm grieving."
"Grieving what? Your single life?" Cole laughed. It was a hollow sound. "Trust me, being Mrs. Van Der Hoven has its perks. Unlimited credit cards, for one."
"I'm grieving my dignity," Elena shot back. "My father is selling me to save his failing software company, and your father is buying me because he wants a connection to the tech sector. We’re livestock, Cole. Doesn't that bother you?"
Cole shrugged, taking a sip of his drink. "It’s how the world works, babe. We’re just the assets."
He reached out, his fingers grazing her bare arm. "Besides, we make a pretty pair. Think of the Instagram engagement metrics."
The casual cruelty of it snapped something inside her.
"Do not touch me," Elena whispered.
"Come on, El. We have to put on a show." He smirked, leaning in closer. "Give the shareholders a kiss."
Elena didn't think. She reacted.
She flicked her wrist, sending the contents of her glass splashing across the front of his pristine tuxedo shirt and down onto his polished Italian loafers.
The chatter nearby stopped instantly. A gasp rippled through the immediate circle of onlookers.
Cole looked down at his shirt. He didn't look angry. He looked... amused. He slowly wiped a drop of cider from his cheek with his thumb.
"Sticky," he murmured. He looked up at her, his blue eyes dancing with a strange light. "I think we need to go clean up. Somewhere private."
He grabbed her hand before she could pull away.
"Let's get out of here," he whispered, loud enough for her parents to hear. "The happy couple needs a moment."
He pulled her toward the side exit, his grip firm. To the room, it looked like a romantic escape. To Elena, it felt like being dragged into the deep end.
